The challenge

The educational and cultural gaps that beset New York City’s impoverished neighborhoods create, for the majority of girls and young women growing up there, a barrier to self-confidence, self-sufficiency and a brighter future. Struggling with inadequate resources, schools in these neighborhoods are often unable to provide their pupils with more than minimum curriculum requirements.

The solutions we're proposing

W4’s Field Project, Time In, recognizes how crucial education through the living arts can be in the effort to reverse this trend and is dedicated to offering at-risk girls the chance to benefit from diverse, interdisciplinary learning. Through its weekly outings to art studios and galleries, theater houses and museums, TimeIn gives girls from poor neighbourhoods the opportunity to explore beyond their daily horizons and engage, in a very hands-on and experiential way, in a world of discovery, creativity and enrichment.

The impact of giving

The Arty Readers program takes girls in grades 2 to 5 on adventures through literary masterpieces, completing and enhancing their understanding through music, movement and art, as well as culture and history. As the girls follow an opera-based curriculum, they are plunged into the full context of every opera studied: its history, language, literature, libretto and musical composition.
