MENTORING/E-MENTORING PROGRAM
W4’s mentoring/e-Mentoring program innovatively connects the (carefully identified) needs of our women’s empowerment field projects around the world with the W4 community’s wealth of professional and personal skills.
Harnessing the power of digital technology, W4 provides complementary, integrated services that enable platform users to not only give financially to grassroots projects, but also to offer effective, non-financial help by contributing their skills and expertise.
The mentoring/e-Mentoring program has been developed in response to several important global trends:
- The immense opportunities to leverage ICTs: connecting mentors/e-Mentors and e-Mentees; enabling the contribution of skills/expertise and the completion of work across geographical boundaries;
- The need of our grassroots field projects for support, skills, and know-how to assist in the start-up/scaling-up or running of their operations;
- The desire of “social investors” (members of the general public or company employees) to make rewarding contributions by sharing their skills, in addition to having a financial impact. This trend (as seen in the domain of corporate social responsibility) is uncovering immense human and economic potential. Our mentoring/e-Mentoring program aims precisely to leverage such potential to the most fruitful ends.
WHAT DOES THE ROLE OF A MENTOR/E-MENTOR ENTAIL?
A mentor/e-Mentor can make an enormous difference to the people running and participating in our field projects—dedicated individuals who, more often than not, are working with very limited means. We’re confident that both mentors/e-Mentors and e-Mentees will benefit from the mentoring relationship, in professional and personal ways, creating an enriching experience for all.
W4 recognizes that time is very precious! Our mentoring/e-Mentoring program is, therefore, flexible: e-Mentors contribute digitally, at their convenience, and support can range from just 1 or 2 hours per month to full-time.
In-kind support can take many forms: from legal assistance to financial strategy advice; from help with translation work or website development to marketing and communication. For some field projects, the e-Mentees may be the participating girls and women themselves: in such cases, e-Mentoring may take the form of online IT training, language tutoring, or coaching to guide girls in their schooling and young women in their search for jobs.
