Children of Asia Philippines provides crucial educational opportunities and vital services to vulnerable girls and young women from the poorest families in the slums of Cebu city. This support gives these girls the opportunity to escape from poverty, empowering them to build safer, brighter futures for both themselves and their families.
The challenge(s) that Children of Asia Philippines is addressing:
Living and working conditions in the rural areas of the Philippines are often severe, with much of the population exposed to extreme poverty and the intensifying impact of climate change. As a result, many have migrated to the centrally located Cebu City, the country’s second-largest city, drawn by the hope of work and of a better income.
Unfortunately, however, the urban reality many migrants are confronted with is a far cry from the world of opportunities they dreamt of. Many remain unemployed and face a grueling daily struggle in order to sustain their family’s basic needs. In an environment marked by pollution, serious overcrowding and a shortage of jobs, girls and young women are particularly vulnerable, often being forced to fend for themselves on the street with little to eat and inadequate clothing. A lack of shelter compels many to sleep on the sidewalks or in market stalls. Not only does this severely limit girls’ and young women’s life prospects, it places them at great risk of physical abuse, drug abuse and being trafficked for labor or prostitution. These conditions perpetuate the vicious cycle of intergenerational poverty.
Children of Asia Philippines works to lift these girls and young women out of poverty by providing them with educational assistance, food aid, and medical and dental care. Such comprehensive care from their infancy through their college graduation equips vulnerable girls and young women with the qualifications and skills they need to find employment and create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.
