The education of girls in Afghanistan is vital in helping them rise out of poverty and into a position where they can participate in the development of their communities.
The challenge:
According to a study by the Thompson Reuters Foundation, Afghanistan is the most dangerous country in the world in which to be a woman. 87 per cent of women and girls in Afghanistan are illiterate (compared with 57 per cent of men) and as many as four out of every five Afghan girls undergo forced marriage at a young age. In some parts of the country girls must risk their lives to attend school.
Lack of education greatly increases the likelihood of forced marriage, as uneducated girls don’t have the qualifications required for most regular employment. The dangers entailed in going to school, widespread bias against girls’ education and a shortage of both teachers and schools are major obstacles that must be overcome in order for progress to be made on girls’ education in Afghanistan.
The solutions we’re proposing:
W4’s field partner, Mountain2Mountain, is confronting the lack of school infrastructure head-on, and has managed to attract 3,500 girls to its school DehKhudaidod on the outskirts of Kabul. To deal with the numbers the school has three teams who take it in turns to run the school each day, allowing the girls to prosper in a good learning environment.
With the knowledge, self-confidence and, eventually, qualifications they acquire at school, these young women are able to find employment and become financially independent. Education allows them to take control of their lives and even take a lead in fostering progress in their communities.
Your impact:
Your donation will give a girl in Afghanistan the opportunity to benefit from a good education by funding the purchase of school supplies and crucial learning materials.Equipped with an education, these young women will have a real chance of improving their standards of living, and those of their families and communities.
Help young girls in Afghanistan exercise their right to an education!
